A female walrus which surfaced last month near the Wadden island of Schiermonnikoog has now been spotted basking on Harlingen’s Zuiderpier.
Individuals must keep a distance of at minimum 100 metres for their personal basic safety and that of the animal, Wageningen University animal biologist Hans Verdaat informed Nu.nl.
Sea mamal rescue centre Pieterburen, which has observed the animal, explained it is healthful apart from some scratches to its entrance flippers, which were being most likely triggered by the sharp shells of mussel or oyster banking institutions it had to negotiate.
The centre explained the ‘adventurous walrus’, whose typical habitat is in the Arctic areas close to the North Pole, ‘is perfectly capable to glance just after alone and will discover its way household in time if remaining to its own devices’.
It is the initially time in 23 decades that a walrus has been spotted on the Dutch coastline. The existing customer is assumed to have travelled by way of Denmark and Germany.
